Cars are so popular because they allow you to travel long distances in comfort. They are also very convenient unlike public transport where you have to wait for a bus, train, coach or tram, a car lets you walk out of your front door and drive straight to your destination without waiting. You can carry passengers and luggage easily unlike a motorbike which can only carry a limited amount, a car can carry as much as you can cram into it and if you have too much you can tow a trailer. Cars also allow you to tow a caravan if you wish.

Because buses are inconvenient, expensive, unreliable and thoroughly unpleasant. They are frequently poorly signed, so you are unsure which to catch, they change route without any notice whatever, and they are slow.
Trains, when they don't crash, are quick, but very, very expensive. Another mass transportation problem!
Cycling is healthy, of course, but cities are arranged for cars, and cyclists are at risk from larger vehicles, every time they leave the house. At work, at British Gas, I was unpopular because I cycled there, when my managers thought it unfitting that a trainer cycle, rather than drive to work.
Cars have plenty of disadvantages, but, barring accidents, they get you there, they are convenient, and you travel privately - no crazy, drunk or stinky beside you!

The number one reason is that you can just hop in one anytime and drive it where you want to go, whether it's to the grocery store or your uncle who lives 1,000 miles away. Public transportation has limited routes and its own timetables for going places.
Second, they're fairly quick compared to such options as horses or bicycles.
Third, they're suitable for almost any weather - heat, ice, rain, you name it. While you can ride a motorcycle in some types of bad weather, few bikers would like to do this.
Fourth, they can carry a lot of different things. You can bring your family anong on the trip or haul a large load of cargo. It's hard to carry a week's worth of groceries on something smaller than a car.

The car allows you a greater level of independence and it is more convenient than public transport. What convincing argument is there to choose having to wait at bus stop possibly in bad weather is better than getting straight into your and arriving directly at your destination.

You are in charge of your own destiny.
You can get where you want at any time you want, no living on timetables.
You stay dry
A car can make a statement about you like an article of clothing, if you let it.
This being said, I only use my car for long distances, whilst using a bicycle or walking for very short ones and a moped for slightly bigger ones.

You can choose the departure and arrival time, Comfort, No queueing and waiting. Never overcrowded and you are guaranteed a seat. Cleaner and better than public transport which is a joke in the UK.

they are a symbol of ones independance and status. they aren't a rare thing anymore, its as normal as owning a tv so its assumed that at 17 you will learn to drive, and if you have a licence you have a car. the world is changing and not always for the better. we are becoming materialistic. gone are the days of bike and bus.

It isn't rude to fart in your own car; it is rude to fart on a bus, in a plane, on a train, or any other place where people would be subject to toxic vapors. They are also status symbols and provide the ability for one to be free and escape the real world for a little bit. Mostly I think it is the fart thing.
