Absolutely. A population that is in a perpetual state of fear wants leadership and wants that leader to get rid of what is causing the fear. The initial stages will probably include panic and disorder, but that subsides shortly after the government begins to wield its authority. Typically, a nation ruled by fear ends up in an extremist political environment such as communist, fascist, etc. This is to help retain power for the ruling party by controlling all aspects of the country.

A perfect example is George Orwell's 1984 which features a nation state perpetually at war with a clearly defined, yet still vague, enemy and the populace is subsequently controlled through a combination of fear and manipulation.

That is what made Bush so successful: he has played to people's fear, hate, and self-importance...the darker side of humanity. What scares ME is that HALF this country responded to it!

I post this often, but:

"It is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Absolutely, thats why we are always kept in a state of turmoil. Government is able to take away our freedom and rights in order to "protect us". Michael Crichton has a very good book out that addresses this subject, ironically enough, entitled "State of Fear"

Of course. When people are in fear they are careful about what and when they do things. They personally limit their own lives and action and those of their children in an effort to stay safe. It has proven effective in all the dictatorships in the world. Keep people in fear and you can also keep them ignorant and unmotivated.

yes ... as stated above by a user , unstable , unreliable ok, but predictable ... the american people as a whole let themselves be led around like puppets on a string ... flash somthing on the TV to work their emotions .... then lead them onto ur agenda using classic bernays "nazi" style propaganda, and they are plastering stickers all over there cars and waving flags off of their ballcaps and running around in a frenzy supporting you .... all you have to do is tell them straight up not to look at the facts and think for themselves ... while ur at it tell them anyone that thinks for themselves is unpatriotic and a conspiracy nut "damaging" their country ... even suggest to them that they might be supporting "terrorism" if they think for themselves ...

Oh heavens no, I would think quite the opposite. Fear can drive people to be very unstable and unreliable.
