According to Cherokee Oral Tradition sage was one of the few plant people to stay awake for the seven day fast after the Great Mystery created the different plants and animals. Because of this it is considered a holy plant and has the abilities to lift the prayers of people to the creator, clean areas of negative spirits and energies, and I've even heard claims of it healing serious illnesses.

The only thing I have ever used sage for was to cleanse a house that had very strange things happening in it all the time. Once my friend brought it over and told us what to do we never had anymore problems.

sage is also used in alternative therapies for things like hot flushes, menopause, excessive sweating etc, i think due to the fact it contains plant estrogens. It also is an antioxidant.
It is also used for cleansing... do a search on Native American "smudging" fo rmore info on that.

Some native peoples (and Indian wannabees) use it to cleanse themselves before a ceremony. Others use it to keep evil spirits away. Depends on the people.
