Even reformatting will technically not get rid of everything.. you need a complete wipe program.. it will write and rewrite over everything on your drive until the data is completely gone. But if all you want is to get rid of the emails just clear the history after you delete the directory that the files are saved in. But you should also be aware that, every IM, email, and file, sent over the internet is on some server or another between the origin and destination computer. These only occasionally get wiped. Secure transfers are encrypted, but with enough time and processing power, even these are not safe.

The only true way to get rid of all of it is to reformat your hard drive. You can delete anything you want but if some hard core computer guy goes in and is looking for incriminating evidence there's always pieces left over. However be warned reformatting your hard drive will erase everything including your programs and everything will need to be reloaded - but that's the only way to get rid of EVERY little shred of evidence.
