I'm not sure how old the children are that you teach but I hope this will help. I used to keep 6 kids while my husband was in college. I took in a boy of 3 1/2 who had never played with other children, he had no sense of humor nor an imagination. To get him to join in with the other children we went through several minutes a day of acting silly waving arms around dancing silly making silly faces. We did this for at least 5 minutes, it gets a little noisy but it was well worth it.After about five minutes i would tell everyone to stop and breath real deep for about a minute, then we would sit in the floor and i would say who can show me a happy face, sad face, angry face, surprised face( u get the picture). Then i would ask a child who showed me the sad face ,what is something that made them sad? I found that they open up easily because they are all participating. Be sure to call on a different child for each face. good luck.Hope this helped.

I often find small group sharing inspiring. You could set them up in small groups and ask them to discuss freely a given topic. And try to rotate them so they get to expose to other students and this will also help to create friendship among them. Remember communication is a good way to resolve misunderstanding.

To give them a lot of encouragement, just listen, Children have got to know that they are being heard. A good way to break the ice is to find things that amuse and interest them as well as teach them.Good luck!

Gear more towards what your students are interested in. If you have teenagers, gear your activites towards what they might be interested, and don't talk to the kids like they are little kids, because that just makes them shut you out.
