I just basically asked this exact same question. First I asked if every other major city in the US basically has all the same problems of urban decay, gangs, drugs, violent crime, etc as Detroit (maybe not quite on the same scale), why does everyone think it ridiculous to promote Detroit as a place of interest/business for others to visit when noone thinks twice about going somewhere like LA, New York, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, New Orleans, etc.; these same people criticize Detroit for not being that beautiful cosmopolitian metropolis like these other places are considered, argue Detroit has nothing to offer (when it has museums, clubs, universities, bars, casinos, major sporting events, various cultural events, music, theater, the zoo, etc. and countless other things to offer which rival pretty much any of these other places- and if I throw in the recreational outlets/opportunities in the suburbs the choices are almost limitless) to visitors (sometimes out of ignorance and I think at times, sadly enough, due to the "racial divide" and undertones separating city and suburbia), and, then only criticize Detroit while they sabotage it from gaining tourist/business dollars which would help the city and all of metro-Detroit "revitalize" into the very type of place they want it to become. Sure the city has tons of problems but to be fair it does have attractions that rival anywhere else. There's Hart Plaza, JLA, the RenCen/GM World Headquarters right along the river ON AN INTERNATIONAL BORDER that really no other American city, short of Seattle, has. The Detroit Zoo (technically Royal Oak) rivals pretty much any other zoo in the US; the science center and other points of interest for families? Greenfield Village/Henry Ford Museum (next door in Dearborn) is one of the best historical museums anywhere- not to mention the many other various art and historic museums in the city. Not that it's my thing but what about Greektown and the other casinos? The new Comerica Park/Ford Field/State Theater/Hockeytown area is pretty nice-right? Campus Maritus? Farmer's Market? State Fair and the million other events in the city that go on all year? Detroit Symphony and Detroit Opera House and all the cultural centers- the Gem or the Fox? New condos and housing in Detroit along with the variety of other liveable middle class and exclusive wealthy areas in the city itself (and then in the suburbs)? Historic fort(s) , Mo-town and countless other historical places of interest? The Whitney, Pegasus and countless other hi-scale restaurants, not to mention the numerous dining options. Should I go on listing what Detroit does have to offer to combat those that only have negative things to say about the city (for whatever their reasons are)? We all know Detroit has problems like any other major city- gangs, drugs, violent crime, urban decay, etc; I just think we all do a great disservice to the city and the whole metro-Detroit area by continually only harping on the negatives while there are also many positive and unique things about Detroit (along with it's suburbs); also seems crazy to me that we repeatedly try to "scare away" people from visiting the Detroit area by painting the whole region as unsafe or not worth visiting- especially when this area in particular could benefit from tourist dollars in light of the continuing problems of Motowns' Big Three automakers. I'm not trying to paint Detroit (and the Detroit area)as the best city (or region) in the country, but I always try to be fair about the city and the whole metro area.

The things you have heard are true.
Unfortuantely i dont think that detroit has hit bottom yet.
Right now we are in the midst of a teachers strike.

I work in detroit every day and on my way to burger king i passed no less than 3 crack whores, and i cant tell you how many abandoned buildings.

I don't see much hope here.

I want to sell my house in a detroit suburb so i can move somewhere else..somewhere nicer

By the way, other cities have similar problems, but not to the extent that detroit does. Detroit is about 80% beyond the point of no return, whereas in other metro areas, the bad areas are only 10/15/20% at worst

Downtown is very nice. I love going down there. They have fixed it up nicely. There have been large corporations moving back into the city (Compuware for example), housing development, the Detroit Institute of Arts is one of the best art museums one could go to, and the night life of Detroit has gotten much better. Many night clubs have opened up, very good clubs. There is still much work to do in the city, but I think it is much better than it was 15 years ago.
