Mate. Dont touch Dell. Yer sure cheap PCs until something goes wrong. Support really sucks.

With the overhead that they save on NOT selling in shops, they are able to pass along the savings to the customers.

It's because they make thier Computers from the cheapest parts and dare not have a local shop where the customer can get to them

in michael dell's book "direct from dell"he explained his entire early career and business stratagies, they include custimization and this is done through pre-ordering , the work is then done and then shipped first answer is also correct low overhead is one of their objectives

so they dont have to pays lots of rent on shops and that means they can make there stuff cheeper and also dont have to speek with lots of people with no idea what they want waisting there time

It might keep their prices down and helps them to avoid coming face-to-face with you when it all goes wrong, but how come they charge more than nearly everybody else when it comes to add-ons?

Honestly - because they don't have to.

If they can take orders on-line and by phone, they don't have to pay rent for stores or hire sales crews.

They just keep you on hold all day!
