My best friend in high school was a black chick whose favorite band was Metallica and she played guitar...my point is like what you damn well please and remember: Jimmy Hendrix was the greatest rock and roll guitarist ever.

I am old enough to remember that the roots of rock are definitely black. Who do you think invented rock? Rock grew out of blues music and jazz. Many of the greatest classical rock songs were written and performed by black muscians. Take a look at the faces on the albums in this "roots of rock" listing on about.com. They're sure not just a bunch of white boys! Tell your friends your music has as much claim to be black music as theirs does, maybe more because the roots go deeper. You should also enjoy discovering where today's rock music began. Rock On, girl!

You shouldn't care what other people think or say. I LOVE rock- and if you love rock too, then that's just who you are! Don't let anyone tell you "oh, you're dissing your race" because you're NOT. Everyone has different styles whether it's clothes, music, etc.. You just focus on being yourself and what makes you happy and know that I'm happy for you! :)

Seriously, just be you! I too went through the same thing. In middle school all the black kids made fun of me for wearing a Chili Peppers concert shirt. The next day they made fun of me for wearing a Nirvana shirt. They eventually stopped once they actually heard their music. It's their fault for being musically challenged. Like everyone else has said, music is music, and those who appreciate all kinds-- in my opinion- are the most well rounded and well-adjusted individuals.

Rock on,

C

You should be YOU. Honestly, very few Americans are purely of one race or another. Why should you listen to rap or hip-hop just because you're black? I'm white and I hate country!

Unfortunately people here like to identify themselves as one race, decide that one culture is acceptable for that race, and shun people who don't follow it. White people will make fun of other white people and call them wiggers, and black people make fun of other blacks for "acting white."

I say good for you for doing what it is you like, and I feel sorry for those who are so narrow-minded that they isolate themselves and can't explore what other cultures have to offer.

They are the ones who are wrong. They want you to fellow a sterotype. You are not black, or any otehr race, just because you like cretin music or dress a certin way. You are black because of your heritige, not becuase of what people call modern culture.

Besides, race is not important. You should be who you wnat to be, don't live for them.

Do whatever makes YOU comfortable. It's the people telling you those things who have the wrong attitudes. Let me ask you this: Do you allow others to be who they are without persecuting them? I bet you do. Others need to be the same way. You might point this out to them if they're the type that won't brutalize you for it.

I'm sure they have better things they could be doing besides showing you their ignorance.

Listen to whatever YOU like and to hell with what anyone else thinks. There really isn't any style of music that is race specific and your friends should just let it go.

No. You should be "in touch" with yourself first. Do what you want to do. Be proud of where you come from, but you don't have to go back there.

It's comments like the ones you are getting that allow racism to continue.

They are being racist themselves. You have the God given right to partake in whatever it is that you prefer, the majority race that participates in it has nothing to do with anything, unless someone wants to make it as such. Just ignore them and listen to whatever music it is that you enjoy.
