Under the Hephthalites and Sasanids, many of the Afghan princedoms were influenced by Hinduism. The Hindu kings of the Shahi family were concentrated in the Kabul and Ghazni areas. Excavated sites of the period include a major Hindu Shahi temple north of Kabul and a chapel in Ghazni that contains both Buddhist and Hindu statuary, indicating that there was a mingling of these two religions.
Islamic armies defeated the Sasanids in 642 at the Battle of Nahavand (near modern Hamadan, Iran) and advanced into the Afghan area, but they were unable to hold the territory; cities submitted, only to rise in revolt, and the hastily converted returned to their old beliefs once the armies had passed. The 9th and 10th centuries witnessed the rise of numerous local Islamic dynasties. One of the earliest was the Tahirids of Khorasan, whose kingdom included Balkh and Herat; they established virtual independence from the 'Abbasid Caliphate in 820. The Tahirids were succeeded in 867–869 by a native dynasty from Sistan, the Saffarids. Local princes in the north soon became feudatories of the powerful Samanids, who ruled from Bukhara. From 872 to 999 Bukhara, Samarkand, and Balkh enjoyed a golden age under Samanid rule.

I'm a liberal (who actually grew up across the Bay from Marin County), and I don't think that he should be set free. I don't quarrel with his decisions, I just think that his parents should not have permitted him to make one without a sound discussion of consequences. So he wants to convert to Islam. Fine. So he wants to move the Central Asia. Fine. There's nothing necessarily wrong, but any responsible parent would not let that pass without ensuring that he knew what he was doing and why. Either way, he deserves the chance to atone for his mistakes, but not the freedom to make them again. Was converting to Islam and moving to Afghanistan a mistake? I don't know, I haven't spoken with him or read anything that outlined what he had in mind. But that doesn't excuse betraying his country. By acknowledging the stupidity of his past, he is unique from about 0.0001% of teenagers that ever lived. That's commendable, but not exceptional, and he shouldn't receive much special credit for that. Sure, we all make mistakes and do stupid ****, especially when we're teenagers. I'm the first to admit that it was probably not a great idea to jump barefoot over that bonfire when I was 14 (at least not as great an idea as it sounded). I got burned, and I became a little wiser that day. But I only endangered my own life and health, not strangers and fellow Americans.

when the muslims invaded the territory.. around 550 AD
Earlier it was part of the Ashokan empire & also has references in ancient texts like Mahabharat.. Rig Veda is supposed to have been created in Afghanistan while it was Part of the GREAT INDIA.
There is a mountain rance named HINDUKUSH
Kush means to Kill
so at some time they killed Hindus living there who decided not to convert to islam. around 550 AD
But take religion away and every one is the same Human beneath/ inside
what a pity every one abuses the :sacred' religion for Hatred & voilence ..... even within the same religion......
Sunni- shia, Brahmin, shudra, catholic & protestant etc the list goes on
A pity.

In Mahabharata there are references of places like KABUL, Kandahar etc. in relation with Gandhari and others, hence it was HINDU territory ruled by Hindus and Aryans then Warrior Muslims came from Mongolia and Arabastan and started capturing the region and converted those people to Islam.
