Before frost. I live in TN and frankly I would take it up around the 22 of this month. New moon. The 40 and 50 degree nights will start to burn the leaves before the frost comes.

You should have brought it in already and pruned it. Right now, if you'll just snip off each tip, pot it in a good mix and bring it in the house. Keep in a very bright spot until the first of October. October 1st, make sure it has at least 10-12 hours of total darkness at night. Do this for thirty days and water good the first time. The next time feed your plant a bloomer, such as 15-30-15 Miracle Gro. I feed mine a 12-52-12. Keep your plant moist but not wet and do not let it sit in a saucer with water. Drain it good after each watering. If you are lucky, it will bloom for you before Christmas. Good Luck!

Go with your other TN answer! Poinsettias are, indeed tropical and will live happily outdoors and get huge, but not in TN. Here in zone 5B, I'd be bringing in that baby by early next month. Nights below 50 would not be good for it. Also, don't be afraid to cut it back when you dig it up and pot it. This will encourage nice tight growth and a prettier plant at bloom time. Water when the soil feels dry and feed once a week, if you're going for winter bloom.

You may be able to leave it in the ground if it is mulched heavily and cut back. Pointsettia is native to Mexico and prefers warmer climates. Bring is in or try the leaving it out and plant your next year's plant you get at christmas outside.
