That's us English people you mean, surely?
Yes, we often talk about the weather when we can't think of anything to say.
Actually, have you noticed that there aren't so many awkward silences in the summer? Perhaps that's because the warmer weather gives people more to do so they've got more to talk about. Mind you, we've had quite a lot of rain lately and the wind makes it quite cold even when the sun's shining and ..............

Awkward silences happen once you're apprehensive and distracted by way of how the communication is going, how the different individual is reacting, what to chat approximately subsequent, etc. regrettably, only like impotence, thinking approximately a clumsy silence is a self-pleasing prophecy. only positioned, you could desire to be greater advantageous in your self. If a particular communication is going nowhere, or in case you could tell that your better half is dropping interest, there is not any injury in acknowledging that (in a humorous way, don't be self-pitying). If no person selections up the practice, only permit your ideas wander- think of roughly some thing at present going on on your existence, a prior communication, or a question you will like replied. Then blurt it out. you could hardly pass incorrect by way of asking somebody a question. human beings like to chat approximately themselves, and could have plenty to chat approximately. in case you don't be responsive to what to ask, then you definately don't be responsive to sufficient approximately that individual- ask something! the important element is to objective to concentration your ideas on the communication, no longer relating to the communication. If a silence happens, only settle for it. being waiting to rejoice with a silence is between the keys to a deep courting, and a communication will initiate in its own time.

Because it is a nice safe neutral ground. If you are having an awkward silence, you don't want to break it with a question on religion or politics. That certainly wouldn't help things now would it?

Some people are obsessed with it, like my brother-in-law! Others can't think of anything else interesting. What are you going to say, "So, how's your sex life?"?! Also, meterologists have gotten totally out of hand...they hog the media and after Katrina, all you hear about is the freaking WEATHER!!!
