Can't usually buy new except aftermarket usually...

But yeah the alternator is going out and/or you have too much of a load on the electrical system at idle.... Alternators will make most power at 1500 rpm and above... and a thump stereo system usually will kill an alternator and battery for this reason (if played with the engine at idle all the time... that's why killer systems run multiple batteries or go to higher amp alternators like the Leese-Neville or Ford ambulance alternators

You will need to remove and have the alternator inspected by a shop that has the tools to check it.. most of the chain stores have the test equipement and do it for free....

It's your choice as I've had good and bad luck will all forms of alternators (reman, new, and rebuilt at alternator shop)... But I would stay away from the cheaper lines of alternators espcially at the chain auto stores as they have a habit of keeping the charge light on and or doing the same symptoms as your alternator....

Get a rebuilt alternator. Auto Zone has them reasonably priced and a lifetime warranty.

Alternators are 3 phase AC which is converted to DC with diodes.I would say that one phase has blown, alternator needs rebuild or replace,it doesnt matter which.
