Quick way to tell..

Alligators have broader snout, and only the upper teeth can be seen with the jaws closed.

Crocodiles have narrower snout, and upper and lower teeth can be seen when jaw is closed.

Alligators are characterized by a broader snout and eyes more dorsally located than their crocodile cousins. Both living species also tend to be darker in color, often nearly black (although the Chinese alligator has some light patterning.)

Also, in alligators only the upper teeth can be seen with the jaws closed (in contrast to true crocodiles, in which upper and lower teeth can be seen), though many individuals bear jaw deformities which complicate this means of identification.

The eyes of an alligator glow red when a light is shined on them. This fact can be used to find alligators in the dark.

Although the belong to the same family what is different between them is the mouth. The Alligator has a kind of round mouth, and the Croc has more of a square mouth.

They are different animals.

The croc has a much narrower/pointed snout than the alligator's wider/rounded one.

The croc is much more aggressive than is the alligator.

you can tell by the way thier teeth are aligned. when a crocodile closes its mouth you can still see its teeth. I don't think this is true for Alligators. That and I belive crocodiles are bigger then gators.
