...why my child's school can afford to give away uniforms, but they've sent home a letter asking for pencils, paper, erasers, glue, and Kleenex to be donated by us parents, because "they have had a significant decrease in state revenues" and "are struggling with the challenges of continuing to provide a quality education"?

WOW! Some of you are forgetting to actually READ the question...I said they are giving away uniforms...I didn't say I am on the receiving end! I buy my own child's clothing, just like every other parent should. The fact that there are so many adults that are functionally illiterate really proves that the public schools are failing at actually TEACHING the kids, doesn't it?

The issue here is misappropriation of funds, not me saying pencils are expensive! If you can't figure out what the question is, please don't answer!

so let me guess. Your question is why the letter? Because they spent all their funds on uniforms and not other crap you can get at the dollar store. And to them quality education is making sure your kid looks like everyone else. who cares if they can read or write. Just as long as Cindy and Sally look alike.

You seem so bitter about your child's school. I have read other questions you asked. They might have a grant for the uniforms.
Also, are they used? When I was in school, uniforms were given to those who might need help. You really need to home school your child since you have such hate for her school. I am sure you have been classified as the Nuts-O parent to all the teachers and staff (and other parents). Relax and enjoy these great years without so much drama.

Thats a good question. I myself have noticed the trend of schools sending home lists of items they need. And you're right, uniforms are not needed for education. However, alot of administration folk in various school districts are old fashioned and not in tune with todays 'ways'. This means they will stick to what they know works. Uniforms promote unity and organization to the school and the school board probably thinks, "we had uniforms, they will too"!

At most schools, new uniforms can be purchased through gate receipts at ball games not through the schools general fund. I know this because I am a janitor at a high school. You would be surprised how much money can be generated through game tickets. That is how they can buy new uniforms, keep the training room equipment up and keep the game equipment in top shape.

hmm. id like this to also be explained. about 6 years ago, $30,000 dollars were raised to build a new elementary school for my district. this money was not the governments, it was strictly donated by the public. when the money was handed over to some big seats to ask for permission to build the school, the money disappeared. and now, 6 years later, are they finaly beginning to build that school. id like to know where that money went to. it was never explained. the way the "higher seats" explained, was that it was simply "lost".
i know how you feel. how come money is spent so recklessly yet they beg for money. sounds too political to me. this year, the kindergarteners were asked to bring their own nap mats, and everything they ever need for that year. crayons, whipes, antibacterial sprays/lotions/gels, soap, paper, pens, pencils, games, toys, the works. its ridiculous! i am just afraid of what the school system is going to make me pay for when my son goes to kindergarten. i dread it.

The schools aren't getting enough money from the state and federal govenrment.
They are hoping that the parents will bail them out by buying school supplies for them, instead of them spending there monies on it.
