Make Poverty History is the organisation (I suppose you could call it a charity). Live8 was simply a one-off event.

live 8 was a concert raising funds so as to help the impoverished nations of the world in debt to the west.
make poverty history is a movement for the debt of the poor world to be dropped.

I think with Live 8 the main aim and goal was to promote awareness, and gain publicity about the situation around the world and in Africa, whereas the one in 1985 or whenever it was, was solely about gaining money- and I think it had a particular event/disaster in mind, namely the Eithiopian Starvation. I personally think that the 2005 event should have been about raising money, as this would have been a more reasonable and achievable goal- as far as I know the debts to africa have still not been cancelled.
