My mom and brother live with me and I have been charging them very minimal rent. I have a 3 bedroom and 2 bath with garage (converted to a bedroom) which makes it 4 bedrooms. I can get $2000 a month if I rent it out, I live in Sylmar California. At this point I get $700.00 total from them as it is, and I told them if I move to buy me another house or move with my boyfriend that I would expect 1/2 market value a month $1000.00 total, I prefer them there than strangers living here. Am I being greedy or fair???My brother doesnt work and he is 37 and capable of working, my mom receives social security and a pension, they have been with me 15 years and I have been really fair with the rent starting at $400.00 and slowly creeped to the $700.00 that it is now. Is this unfair??

No, I think your being more than fair. Your brother is old enough to get a job and you don't need to be supporting him the way you do. Now your mother reminds me of minds because she also gets a monthly pension and social security check. I hope your not being taken of advantage of. You have to do what benefits you because your doing what benefits your brother. Raise the rent to 1000, if they don't like it than they can move & you can get your 2000 from someone else their loss not yours.

Not at all. You should be fair in covering your expenses. How much have they saved over time with your help...

This coming from a person who rents an apartment from her mother and started paying rent immediately.

Well a able working brother he can get a job and pay the extra 300 for him and his mother. Mom should be set for life she birth you, but brother definetly pull your weight as a MAN or get out!

It is better to have someone you know living in your apartment because you know how well they will take care of the place, and the fact that they know it is not for free makes them look after the place even better. Don't feel guilty! you are doing what is right.
