i think there are two major disadvantages:

1. you miss hallway conversations. in our office, at least, there are many discussions and decisions made in the aisle between our cubes. while instant messaging does work pretty well, it's much easier to exchange ideas and brainstorm live. even picking up the phone to call someone is more effort than just walking over to a group of people already talking.

2. blurring the line between your work and personal time. working from home (assuming that's where you're going to telecommute from) makes it difficult to determine when your work time starts and your personal time ends. for example, if you decide to do laundry during the middle of the day, do you make up that "work" time later that evening?

i'm sure there are more, but those are the first ones that come to mind.

No face time with peers, customers or supervisors.

Often telecommuters are left out of office events, lunches, water cooler conversations, etc.

Telecommuting offers several benefits but you lose a lot of personal interaction.
