Data actually travels via fiber optic cables that travel below the sea across the oceans to every continent except Antarctica. It's pretty amazing, in fact the first cable was laid and operating in 1850 across the English channel. The first trans-Atlantic cable connection Europe with America was laid in the 1860s as a telegraph cable. These cables are still in place, but have been replaced by other cables throughout the 1900s and most recently by fiber optic cables in the 1980s. We do not use satellite for much of our standard communication, including websites, we use these cables.

Generally undersea cables or satellite.
One of the biggest links between Australia and west coast america is teh Southern Cross Cable for example. It runs from Australia via New Zealand and Hawaii.

There are 14 nodes that they are called "Internet Backbones" .
your ISP (in 3rd layer of Network) is connected to some 2nd Net layers and those layers are connected to one of that 14 main nodes . these 14 nodes are connected to each other via Fiber ,links , ... under sea , between countries.

I would think you're right! I haven't seen any real long wires being spread across the oceans.
