I'm not going to pretend to be qualified to answer your question (I don't know any African languages), but I also like the characteristics you're looking for in a son's name, and wanted to offer my opinion. I like the names Ariel (ah-ree-el) which means "lion of God" in Hebrew and Uriel (ooh-re-el) which means "light of God." For those who aren't that into the whole God idea, Ari alone--also a name--means lion and Uri--also a name--means light/my light. Anyway, good luck!
