In general, the more of one u have, the less of the other.
But some people with low self-esteem express it in other non-addictive choices.

I appreciate what "reliable sources" means.... but allow me, please, to suggest that a majority may "think" one thing, and the truth may be something quite different. For instance, not one in a hundred psychologists can tell you where the "source" of self-esteem exists within a person, and yet, those ninety-nine are absolutely convinced that it is simply a matter of ones thinking. Why do they believe this?
Because they have been trained in "behavioral psychology" and this approach to psychology is based on thinking and a denial and avoidance of both the MIND and Spiritual realms within the human being.
Do not share this with your teacher [because it will probably frighten him/her and you will receive a poor grade] but the source of poor self-esteem comes from the Negative Self- Image, deeply repressed within the MIND realm. The more negative misperceptions that are held within ones NS-I, the more likely one will "punish oneself" by engaging in self-destructive activities.
There are many ways attempted to counteract this tendency, and most fail because they do not address the source where it exists... which is within a person's MIND. This is the reason it is so important to realize that the MIND is not physical, and certainly not a part of the brain, and that special training is NECESSARY before one should be allowed to serve as a mental health professional.
Peace

on yahoo or google
look up gambling addictions and abuses and then look up drug abuses and the affects they have on the family
and so on.........
look up first...abused women and men and the after affect of the lives they live.
this will start you with this paper.
there's so Meany thing you can look for in that,
the way they live after the abuse and before
they tell a story about it all,and how it happened and what they feel now.
good luck on your paper.

Self-esteem is a myth. No kidding! There is a book called 'The Myth of Self-esteem'. Not only will it explain why self-esteem is a myth but it will help you with your paper.

Go to library, do a psych abstract search using your key words and look for a literature review.
