H.P. Lovecraft
Robert Bloch
F Paul Wilson (Start with The Tomb)
Neil Gaiman (fantasy, but dark fantasy with a horror edge sometimes)
Robert R McCammon (if you like The Stand, try McCammon's Swan Song)
George RR Martin (Fevre Dream, The Armageddon Rag and Night Flyer are all good)
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, although they're more thriller-type than straightforward horror.
Brian Lumley (Many like his Necroscope series, but I prefer his Lovecraft-type horror)
Clive Barker
Dan Simmons
Shirley Jackson
Richard Matheson
Tanith Lee
Whitley Streiber (I particularly like Wolfen, Warday and The Hunger)

Just to name a few and give you a start. I love horror books and I must admit though Stephen King is my all time favorite. I do like to read other authors. I hope this list is helpful for you.

Thomas Harris and Clive Barker come to mind. Depends on what you are looking for. Barker can have a hint of sfi-fi/fantasy sometimes and Harris is Thriller/Horror.
If you are looking for something closer to King I would recomend Peter Straub or Dean Koontz (Mr Murder is great!). Also I have heard great things about Mr. Koontz's Odd Thomas series.
Good luck. What fun!!

Look for The Ghouls on the used market; it has a number of wonderful old horror stories. Another one (and I still treasure my copy) is Stories for the Dead of Night--another book on the used market. Shirley Jackson's older stuff is pretty good. Gaston Larou's original story "Phantom of the Opera" is another. The first book of Strahd the Vampire from the D&D Ravenloft series is surprisingly good. Poe and Lovecraft are considered the standards, but look for "Carmilla" and "Dracula's Guest" among the horror anthologies. See if you can find any copies of the Zacherly books, such as Zacherly's Vulture Stew or Zacherly's Midnight Snacks. Don't fail to check out the short stories of Ray Bradbury. There are aspects of horror in a number of them. If you can't find them anywhere, see if they have been transcribed to Project Gutenberg, the free net library. B.
