In "Transcendental Mediation" one closes his eyes, and repeats silently in his head, the same sound over and over. (Ohm is a well known "mantra")
When you realize you are thinking of something and your mind has wandered, return to the mantra over and over.
This mantra will neutralize your mind for the duration of time in which you practice this.

Trying to do that might make it worse... If you want to empty your head watch the 5th season dvd of The Simpsons. Laughter is the best medicine.

meditation, prayer, breathing... Nothing can totally stop the mind - well, except for death and the cessation of all brain activity.
Although being a blonde, I've been accused of being in that state at one time or another... ;-) (yeah, I'm kidding)

Relaxing music....do you have a CD of just nature sounds like waterfalls, birds chirping, ocean waves crashing? It works for me. I close my eyes and focus on my breathing.
