If you are looking for wilderness settings with scenic areas, lots of trees, and more private sites, I always suggest the Provincial Government campgrounds. They are especially good for tenting and smaller vehicles. Not your big open RV Park that caters more to people on the go. (Link 1)
Goldstream is great. (Link 2) It is close to Victoria, but you wouldn't really know it is close to a city. 15 km away. That is probably close to where you will be starting.
You can go to the last link and click on the Map anywhere on the Island North of Victoria (Bottom Left) and it will show you all the BC Park locations and you can then look it up for prices and description.

If you intend on spending some time here and want to get the full outdoor experience, I recommend stopping at any outdoor store and picking up a copy of "The Vancouver Island Offroad Book" by the Mussato (?) family. It is about $24, but worth every penny. It will not only give you an awesome map of everything to see outdoors, but a section for hiking, biking, camping, etc. I have bought every edition over the years and use them as a bible. deffinately check out Botanical Beach, Long Beach, Bamfield, Telegraph Cove, Cape Scott (if you like hiking), and stop by Healthy Habits in Port Alberni and say hi to the gang. We'll be sure to tell you all the places to see from here! Have fun - you're coming to see paradise!

There are too many to list!!
Camping season is wrapping up for some parks already, believe it or not..... so check the open dates!
I got great help from www.hellobc.com in planning. We were able to camp at Sidney Spit - a small island accessible only to walkers and boaters. LOVELY! Lots of great campgrounds all over the island though. Ask them to send you the campground guide so you can check them out.
