The longest reptile in the world is the saltwater crocodile which can grow up to 25 ft. long- as long as a small school bus. Measure out 25 feet. Is it longer than the classroom? Compare that length with other amphibians and with the students themselves. Ask students if a 25 ft. crocodile would be an appropriate pet.

The longest reptiles are the green anaconda and reticulated python, which can both reach 10 metres. The anaconda is heavier and is therefore considered the largest snake, but the python reaches great length more often, so it is sometimes considered the longest. However, neither of these comes close to being the largest reptile in terms of weight, bulk and overall size. The biggest living reptile is the saltwater crocodile. The largest one ever is probably Argentinosaurus, a gigantic sauropod dinosaur. Reptiles are not poisonous, but some of them are venomous. The most venomous is the inland taipan, or fierce snake as it's also called. It lives far away from people, though, so it rarely bites humans. The Indian cobra and Russell's viper kill the most people, because they live near them, even though they are much less venomous. I don't know why so many people think the black mamba is the deadliest - certainly it is potentially lethal to humans, but it doesn't even make the top ten of most venomous snakes.

The reticulated python is the longest recorded snake and reptile overall. A specimen that was killed in 1912 or so measured 32 ft. 9 inches long. There are reports that the green anaconda grows as long or longer, but no specimens have been found yet. The anaconda is the heaviest, however. The gharial or gavial and the saltwater crocodile are the longest species of crocodilians. The gavial has turned in lengths of 20 ft., but are suspected to grow longer. The saltwater crocodile has turned in lengths of 23ft. but these are conflicted accounts and it's thought to grow longer too. The leatherback sea turtle is the longest & heaviest turtle in the world. It can grow to be over 8 ft. long. The Crocodile monitor is the longest lizard. The record is 15 ft. long. It's not he largest lizard though, that title belongs to the Komodo dragon.
