Because they're elected by people with little common sense. Pretty simple.

That's a pretty big generalization. I suggest you become more involved in your local government and get a better perspective. Being an elected official is an extremely difficult job and not many people want to do it. You should appreciate the people that care enough to run for office and make our states and nation a better place for all of us.

Maybe the same reason that caused the lack of common sense of the voters who elected them.

If you're talking about the upper most levels it's because they aren't common people. Most have a lot of money and don't know the needs of commoners.

I wanted to be the first to answer this question. But I have no answer, so I can't be the first or the thirty-first.
What government are you talking about? The government of Utah stole money from me. They are a wasteful, corrupt, indolent bunch.

They are too greedy and power hungry to have or use common sense. They don't need common sense when they don't care about the common people who 'elected' them. We have to pay for their stupidity with our taxes, so why should they care? That's what we are here for! For them! (I think they got this part backwards, don't you?)

I strongly suspect that it is because the vast majority of them are lawyers.
Have you taken a good look at our legal system lately or tried to read (and comprehend) a legal document?
Imagine trying to come to any kind of consensus with a room full of egotistical, fat head lawyers who all are fully convinced that his or her plan of action is, without any doubt whatsoever, the best one ever to come down the pike.

Because none of them have ever grown up in the real world like the rest of us. They are all middle class who has never had to scrimp and save or worry where the next weeks food is coming from. They have always had money and have most likly always had someone do the work for them.

They have plenty common sense, just don't care to use it now that big money is buying their thoughts.
