I had a job that had "Cowboy Day" once a year. We all had to dress as Cowboys or Cowgirls. It was stupid but fun.

It's only stupid in that you have to ask the question- if it is okay to wear jeans on Friday then why is it NOT okay to wear them the rest of the week? Is whomever you are concerned about offending Monday-Thursday off on Fridays? If not, then they apparently don't care very much about the clothing you wear.
If, as some people assert, it is bad for business, then you should not do it on any day of the week.
So from a logical stand point there should be no jeans worn ever or they should be okay every day. But the average employee is not going to fight that battle and will, instead, be happy getting to go casual (should they choose to do so) that one day a week.

There was a recent university study which concluded that people act according to their style of dress, known as a "persona".
It turns out that people who wear a uniform tend to behave in a manner they believe such people act.
Casual dress substantially has led to casual work. In general, people who dress casually are more likely to be absent, tardy, produce less and visit more. They are more likely to spend two hours per eight hour day on the Internet on non-work related tasks and using IM for personal use.
The study also found that anger and violence towards fellow workers increased the more casual their attire.

I would not call it stupid but I do not wear jeans at work. I find them too casual for the image I want to project in the office.

No, I like wearing jeans and a polo on Fridays. Also I usually don't have to change when I go out after work.

I have to mostly agree. I like a work environment where people look and act professionally. I don't want to come to work and see my fellow employees dressed like they are going to cut the grass (unless it's a landscaping company, of course).
Dress casual is fine - dress shoes, dockers, knit sport shirts. But, I prefer to see people dressed as professionals - dress shoes, dress slacks/skirts, dress shirts/blouses, neckties. If you look professional you will act professional - just my opinion.

Yes because it is pointless unless it benefits a charity, in which case surely there are more positive ways to contribute

No, because if you have it everyday, people tend to get lazy and really dress down
