The eyes. Read the eyes. If they fidget, if they dilate, it's a huge heads up. If the person keeps looking down, looking away, and never in your eyes, you've nailed them.
If they cover there mouth or any part of there face.
The Feds say that when a person touches there nose, there lying. I don't buy it, but you never see a wise guy scratching and sniffing there nose while being questioned.
If they move from side to side too much, to distract your attention from the subject at hand.
Stuttering, correcting themselve (if it happened to you, you know exactly what happened, you don't need to correct yourself).
The story is very complicated and distorted, to cause confusion.
Changes subjects often, tries to veer conversation, deflects questions or doesn't answer questions.
Is overly defensive when questioned, uses "don't you trust me?" line.
They don't hear the question. What? Did wax build up in your ears in the last 10 seconds? They are buying time to get creative when they ask you to repeat yourself.
The details change a few days later (again, when something happens to you and you are not inventing, you remember the details in the same way over and over again). Ask the person a few years later about a story and you'll really catch a mountain of lies.
That's it.

I depends on how well you know the person like me and my boyfriend have been together for two years and I can tell when he is lying and my sisters and my mum but I cant tell when someone I have maby met a few times and had a drink with is lying unless it seems a bit far fetched. and really I dnt think anyone knows why people lie except for the people doing the lying.

There are some really excellent liars out there, but in general they delay answering a direct question, talking around the issue until they have manufactured a "believable" lie to tell (delay). They may make more or less eye contact that would be considered normal. They talk after you have answered a question, but don't actually answer it (distraction). They give much more information than is necessary in response to the question. If you know them well, their body language is frequently a dead giveaway, but is highly individualized. Their answers, while sounding good, don't hold water. They hold a degree known in the US as J.D (but they are professionals at it, and many of these signs may not be present in such a case).

If someone touches their nose or their face when they talk it probably means that what is going through their head is not what they are saying, but it could mean they have an itch or their hair has fallen in front of their eyes, so be careful. they may lose eye contact. There are many different reasons why people lie. They may think you can not handle the truth, or they are hiding a fault. The best way to get through life is to make friends slowly and just learn who the genuine ones are.

Most of the time. My boyfs a hopeless liar. When people lie to you they tend to look up to right, accessing the creative side of their brain, ie creating a lie. Also, if they giving you just a little too much eye contact, they're lying. Looking to the left is a sign that they are being truthful. It helps to know a person well as well.

I can tell if someone is lying to me by their body language. Like if they will not look you in the eyes or they get all sweaty or if the pull at their clothes or their hair while they are talking to you, or if they say huh huh several times in the sentence I think they are lying to me.

Some people actually suffer from disorders where they cant help it! Check out the body language to try to figure out if someone is lying. Their eyes will dart and their hands will become fidgety!

Mnay people become loud and overt to try to bury the lie into a lesser form.
You see many politicians and religous chiefs shouting, rather than talking. Its because what they say is gobsh*te

In person-to-person conversations you can normally tell when someone's lying. They normally get nervous or it makes no sense, unless they're a pathelogical [sp?] liar then well. yeah.
