I don't believe it's on the rise.
There used to be a lot of racism, mainly based on ignorance, when I was young. But young people now are much better educated about the vast variety of cultures we have here, and have for the most part, shugged off the racist and homophobic attitudes of previous generations.
There are many, many people of middle eastern origin here, including lots of students and people in all kinds of jobs.

Yes it is safe- don't be put off by what you hear in the news. It cuts both ways- here in Britain, the only times you hear about the Middle East in the news is when an act of terrorism is committed there.
Good luck with your degree by the way.

Just be friendly and smile at people. Unfortunately some people of middle eastern origin look a bit scary when they don't intend to. You'll be fine and you'll meet plenty of people in the same postition

No body can guarentee anything, but generally it's pretty safe in the UK. I fear, however, that you will find people who will be racest towards you. Even on a small level, I felt it when people heard my North American accent, some would discriminate against me.

we are not all animals here, there are a minority of people that are racist, but the same is true in every country. You are just as safe here as anywhere else. You won't get stoned in the street, we are quite civilised.
