Use can lead to many, many headaches and problems.
You have to understand a couple of simple things about doing this.
1. The PC more than likely has years of use, so therefore the hardware is getting old and some failures are nearly inevitable. Hardware for older PC's and especially Laptops is fairly expensive.
2. The capabilities of an older PC/Laptop are most likely a lot less than is desireable. That means you may not be able to run software, games, media players, etc. efficiently.
I would seriously think about buying a new Dell or the like long before I purchase someone elses old PC/Laptop and inherit their headaches. There are several relatively inexpensive laptops on the market that are a better choice than used.

Woohoo, a used one. Something I learned long ago when selling tangible goods, Used machines are available for sale for two reasons: (1) there is something wrong with it, or (2) I did my job in persuading someone that the new one is better so they had to get rid of an otherwise perfectly good machine. Part of the reason why you are saving dollars with a cheap one is that it doesn't work as good as a new one. Now if some old grandmother bought one because her grandkids wanted something to play games on or surf the web when visiting, but grandma died, then go for it. But if some college kid is selling it cheap, make sure it runs good and make sure it is really cheap because they've probably painted themselves into a corner tweaking things here an there. If you are buying it at a computer store, ask them about fixing it if it doesn't run so good later. If they say it sells "as is" then tell them "See you later" and leave.
There is some new technology coming so the current stuff is going cheap, go to Dell or Gateway or the refurbish pages at HP's Compaq site. There will be far fewer fires to put out and it will still be cheap.

I don't know what to tell you about buying a preowned computer, but in terms of personal experience... I have an Acer, and I love it. I had an HP, and it was ok, but I had sooo many problems with it. My boyfriend has a Gateway, and he hates it, too many problems, he used to have a Dell, and he misses it so much! I guess as long as you're familiar with, and sure of the people you buy it from, you should be ok.

I ain't no expert. I know how it is with money but I tell you, you're better off with a new one. You never know how long that used lap top you're thinking of buying, is gonna run. Be patient and start saving until you have enough to buy a new one.

Get a Macintosh. You can run OS X, Linux, and Windows on them! They're no more expensive than Dell, sometimes cheaper, and the software they come with is much better! You don't need to run antivirus or antispyware on them, so you save money and your computer isn't slowed down by that junk.
