They might not assassinate him. Many inventors who could reduce the need for oil have not been assassinated, because their patents were purchased, and then just forgotten.
But your basic assumption is right - there is no way are they just going to do nothing about it. I am aquainted with someone else who has also produced zero-point technology, and his life has been threatened, so he decided not to continue with it.
For this people who think perpetual motion is impossible, then that was the case under Newtonian physics, which most of us learned. But now, under quantum physics, the laws have changed, and perpetual motion will soon be a regular feature in Physics,

Somewhat begging the question, as such a thing is supposedly impossible, but probably not - Oil would still be needed for making plastics and lubricants and other stuff, and they would diversify into other businesses.

maybe they already have been :)
didn't you ever read the story of the Chinese man who invented a flying machine just after the Great Wall was built - the Emperor came to look at his invention (which of course the man was very proud of) but the Emperor had the man killed and all evidence of his invention destroyed because it made is wall obsolete

probably not cos if he did invent it it would break the laws of physics and be impossible so if it happens the person would be 'miricle man' and be capable of defending himself and killing the oil barons sent to kill him

More likely they would capture him and force him into indentured slavery with them to find ways of extracting oil more cheaply.
