The biggest problem with the services I'm offering is their newness and novelty. I need to know the guidelines or secrets to writing an effective press release.

Keep it simple. Speak in simple terms and make sure everyone can understand the technical terms you include in it. It also helps if you have someone else edit it so that minor mistakes get caught before it goes out for publication.

The problem is not usually with the press release, but the fact that news editors get a lot of press releases, and most of the time they end in the bin! or deleted items folder of their email program.

You should always follow up your press release with a phone call, that way you can draw attention to it, and increase the probability of it being picked up.

I found out from a recent publicity drive, that even if you provide all the information in the press release, the journalist will still question you about the event anyway if they are interested in it.

Most of the times when I call, I usually have to send it to a different address, as the one generally available on a website etc doesn't get checked that regularly.

Personally i wouldn't pay someone to write or distribute a press release. If your item is news worthy, and you make contact with an individual, it will be published.

Product press releases are a different kettle of fish though.

This is what I learned:
*It has to be newsworthy.
*Make sure it is sent to editors or new directors for publication or broadcast in the media.
*It have to gain attention of the editor; it it is then they could run a narrative within their media.
*It should not be long-winded; usually one to two pages long.
*The release should be hand-delivered or mail it off first class.
*Typed not hand-written and one-side of paper' double space
*At the end of the written press release there should be #### on the bottom of page.
*It should have the following information:
-Company's name and address in the upper left-hand corner
-Contact's name and number
-Headline should be the title of the release; the news value of the release.
-Addition information may be added in one or several paragraphs in order of importance.
-Written in third person
-A release date should be included to let the editors to the time it should be announced to the public; "For Immediate Release".
-Have facts
*It must be written objectively; no show of biased interest in the event.

Hope this helps!

There is a format for it but usually I just do it however I feel like and my stuff always gets published. Just remember to put who, what, where, when. Long as all the info is there and it's easy to pick out they'll glean what they need from it. I'll bet most ppl don't use the correct format.
