There are several abbreviations at use. World Wide Web is the www and there was a suffix set which was supposed to give us some cues as to what type of web site you are visiting is: com is for commercial, edu for education, net is for network, org is for organization, gov is for government. In some cases they have abbreviations for nations, which cues the reader into realizing that the language found on the web site may be different. The html and http are abbreviations as well, for Hyper-Text Mark-up Language, and http isn't coming to me at the moment (probably will right after I press Send or something). Anyway, there are others like TV, BUS, etc., but those usually haven't caught on so they may not be around for long if they still are.

world wide web and com- for commercial its cause back then .com used to be for commercial sites only but then people started breaking the rules and now everything is .com

I believe that ".com" would stand for commercial, like "org" stands for organization, or "edu" stands for education.
