It's one of the more popular names in Poland. That and, for example, Agnieszka (Agnes). And of course Maria, Ewa, Magdalena, Joanna, Katarzyna (Catherine). They tend to go in waves - in one decade, one name will be popular, in another, another name.

I am not so 'up' on female names, but I have noticed that it seems like half the men born ca. 1964 are named Robert, and half the men born ten-ish years later are named Rafal (Raphael).

One thing that comes to mind is that, Poland being a very Catholic country, almost everyone is named after a saint. And many of these names are in the Bible (including Anna - see Luke 2:36-38).
