At present, there is no cure for alopecia areata, although the hair may return by itself. There are various treatments, which are most effective in milder cases, but none are universally effective.
There are several available treatments; choice of treatment depends mainly on a person's age and the extent of their hair loss.
Alopecia areata occurs in two forms: a mild patchy form where less than 50 percent of scalp hair is lost, and an extensive form where greater than 50 percent of scalp hair is lost. These two forms of alopecia areata behave quite differently, and the choice of treatment depends on which form is present.
Current treatments do not turn alopecia areata off; they stimulate the follicle to produce hair again, and treatments need to be continued until the disease turns itself off. Treatments are most effective in milder cases.

Unfortunately, there is no known CURE for alopecia areata... HOWEVER, there are a number of treatment options available to stimulate the hair follicles into growing again... One of the BEST treatments is corticosteroid injections which any dermatologist can do in the affected area and have minimal to no side effects. These are done mostly for people who have less than 25-40% of hair loss and are not as effective for people with total hair loss.
Although not scientifically proven, stress can also act as 'trigger' in alopecia. Be sure to take time out for yourself and possibly try stress relieving activities such as yoga or walking.

Hi
I am currently working on a website that will answer all the questions that will ever be raised in relation to Alopecia Areata.
If you bookmark :
http://www.calosol.com
it currently shows you case histories and how they were treated. By the end of next week that site will contain pretty much any information that anyone suffering from Alopecia will need.

No. I have 2 friends with it. One is totally bald and has been since he was 12. The other is an older woman. Her hair was always thin and fine but about 2 yrs ago started really falling out. Every few weeks she has to go have several shots in her head! Yikes! But it's helped her and made the hair come back. (I would never want this but I'm a little jealous she NEVER had to shave and the hair on her head was always pretty if not thick) Good luck finding a treatment that works. There are options out there! :-)
