Since this failure is very sporatic, I tend to agree with your initial assessment of a faulty hard drive. Over the years I've had several HD's fail and that is a common failure mechanism with a HD that is on its' way out.

Did they warranty your parts and labor for at least one year? If so then I would go in and demand a new hard drive be installed. Most likely they will never see the problem on their test bench because it happens so relatively infrequently.

I doubt very much that RAM has anything to do with it because your PC will operate for quite some time before failing. RAM problems don't typically happen that way.

If they don't want to give you a new HD make a little noise in front of their customers. That will usually get some positive response from them.

Dude, I think that I have the answer. Your computer has been hit by a major virus, and what you have got to do is to clean it immediately. If this fails, then a simple cure that you may have to do is to reset your computer to the point before the problem even occured. You may also want to consult the store where you purchased your computer, and the reason is that since it is only a few months old, that it is very likely under warrenty.

Get on the phone with the computer manufacturer tech support. I would guess that the problem is either memory fault or hard disk error.

You have a great system there... don't wait until it's too late before you call.

It's a lemon. Take it back. Those kinds of errors are really a bit much for only 2 months old.

Is it a Dell, perhaps?

The bios and drivers may require updating, but it's a new PC. You really shouldn't have to deal with it.
