….The US government is pushing hard for sanctions against Iran, through the same UN ? If Iran follows US government's example, they should ignore the UN and call it names, and carry on as usual !
Has USA changed its mind about the UN ? Or is it the case of " I use it , when it suits me, and dump it when it doesn't " ! ?

Edit to "MUSE" :
Thanx for your kind words !
The point here is not ( as you guessed it ) about the legitimacy of the UN. Nor is it about what Iran is doing! The real question is that USA ( and Israel ) have set a very bad example, when it comes to respect for the UN ! how do they expect others to respect it ?
My point is, more about "Dumping it when it doesn't" , and not so much as "Use it when it suits me " !
And I disagree with you regarding , " That's what its there for!"

Edit on MUSE 2:
I have nothing but utmost respect for majority of US public, also I believe they are not as informed about world events, compared to Europeans ! I blame the US media for this.
I also completely disagree with you on "the silent majority in this country is still the guiding force of the USA." ,
Thanx for a polite and informed discussion.

the duality of being a hypochrit government. They don't have the means to attack Iran, so they come running back to the old UN. If you can't keep your own hand clean shut up about others. That's not to say I don't agree with what Iran does.

I'm sure your smart enough to know the UN serves a vital role in the world. I read through enough of your answers to realize you don't need me to explain it to you.
The UN provides a forum for all the nations of the world to bring their grievances. It's a world court in which differences can be aired, and delegates can better judge the truth. The UN has successfully prevented countries from choosing sides and starting worldwide wars.
The US in the past has brought many issues to the UN and found world opinion against them. Of course the US left pouting, but like every other country we're not right all the time. You must remember that the people of the USA ultimately control the power of the government. World opinion does matter to us. When the world thinks we're wrong, it gives us time to reflect on the matter.
UN sanctions are important because it presents a worldwide unified front against an aggressor nation. It's unlikely Iran will ever get support from another country if it chooses to ignore the UN sanctions. This isolates them and makes them less likely to defend their position with arms.
Every nations uses the UN when it suits them, not just the USA. That's what its there for.
PS on your edit:
The USA sets a bad example about a lot of things. It's the nature of the beast when it comes to a multi cultural country. You've lived here yourself and must know that the heart of the USA is much different than the facade. What was once called the silent majority in this country is still the guiding force of the USA. The downside of a silent majority is that people who have never lived here don't know it exist. The world's impression of the USA comes from vocal extremists. This becomes even more problematic when an extreme right winger is the president.
I think the world is going to see the political front in the USA move more toward center in the near future and lose the bull in the china shop mentality.
As far as using the UN, no country is bound by a UN vote. The UN is not a governing body. It is a forum of world opinion and nothing more. Any country is free to use a UN decision or dump it as they see fit. This does not dilute the UN's role in world affairs. It strenghtens it.
PSS on Edit 2:
Of course we know the US media is slanted. That's why a lot of us here in the US listen to the BBC religiously. Seems to be the only news source that is totally unbias. We're not as uninformed as you imagine. And then there Yahoo! Answers where people like you enlighten others as well.

The USA will be not be in it's unique position of power (which is only temporary).
People will not forget what a bullying force it has tried to be in the world.
The European union is spending Billions on a united world force and is building the most advanced fighter jets in the world.
China is rapidly becoming the world's largest economy and certainly has no shortage of resources or people.
America needs to wake up and stop treating the rest of the world like @rseholes.
Most of America's bases in Europe which is uses as a platform to launch attacks on the rest of the world are on loan from European countries for payment for services rendered during WW2.

We need UN, but we feel kind of disabused.
We have to remember that UN is mostly a "five member club".
Even the USA can´t control it.
UN is necessary but must be reformed. What may turn to be impossible.
All the 5 big ones want to reform by their own schemes.
The other members, almost 220 would like a reform under which they should be taken on account.

Yes, it is like a gigantic committee packed with left wing, totalitarian loving, control freaks. It also doesn't mind having the despotic leaders of tyrannical regimes as part of its membership. We, in Britain, are always encouraged by left wingers and soppy Liberals to go through the UN and not take independent action. But, as you point out, it is a talking shop where inertia rules. God help us, if a really desperate situation develops in the world, and we have to rely on that bunch for quick decisive action. It is also, a little like the EU. I think that the idea is to talk the opposition to death with left wing prattle.

what an odd observation, huh?
my own church recently made it's own resolution nationally and internationally to stand with the UN based on respect for human life and advocating international human rights
I thought the US was also a leader in this category but character is shaped by actions, and actions lately have been harmful and agains humanity
world domination and control of the people, the mind and the heart is always at stake
I like the antithesis, world peace and acceptance, respect and cooperation

The US invaded Iraq under the excuse of a UN directive. For the most part, the US rules the UN anyway, although most people don't seem to think so. I do see your point though!

Gutless, yes. Selective action most definately.
I believe their is still an outstanding resolution that was passed in the late 60's involving one country being told to vacate another country's land (they did not , and still havent). Havent seen many caucasian countries chucking bombs on that one to sort them out.
