The previous post is a good idea, but for general idea here you go !!
Serial - RS232 Data ports can be 9 or 25 pin
Paralell - Mainly used for printers, but can be used for various other devices, ie. scanners, peer to peer connection
IDE - Harddrives, CD-Roms, and some other storage devices
SCSI - Various different versions, can be used for virtually anything, scanners, harddrives, etc
USB - More modern port, faster transfer than previous types of ports, you name it you can probably find a device to connect to it.
Firewire - Pretty much the same as USB but faster again.
Gameport - Used for connecting game controllers. ie jopypads/joysticks.
MPU401 - This generally built into the gamport used for controlling MIDI(Musical Intergrated Digital Interface) devices, such as MIDI keyboards/Sequencers
If you're talking the internal expansion ports on a PC then you've got
ISA - The original slot for adding cards to a PC
VESA - An expansion on the ISA standard with an extra slot
PCI - The new de-facto standard for expansion cards
PCI-Express - A must faster version of the original PCI standard
AGP - Advanved Graphics Port - A slot designed for graphics cards
USB comes in two versions USB 2 being faster than USB 1
Again there are variations on most of the above, your best bet is to do a search or use one the links posted in previous answers.
Hope this has helped
