I turn my computer on, as you do, and a few seconds after, turn the monitor on. Theres only one problem with that. The monitor won't stay on. As soon as the password screen opens the screen flickers (Sort of like turning of and off) Its not flickering though to be exact, its more like a flash. The screen will flash up the image, then 'turn off' for a few seconds and flash the screen up again.

The only way i can get it to work after that is hold the on/off button down towards the end of of 'off' part of the flicker/flash, leave it for five minutes and then turn it back on. Its a bit rubbish, obviously, because this can take a while!!!

I don't know what is wrong, whether its the monitor, the actual computer, graphics card or what. Really annoying and any help would be much appreciated!

Same thing happened to me before. If you leave it on, does the screen occasionally flicker? If so, this is probably your graphics card. A lot of monitors these days have an auto-detect feature to see when there is a video feed coming from the graphics card. If the graphics card is buggy, then the monitor may shut off.

I agree with unplugging the monitor from your PC and try viewing the various setup screens available. If this doesn't go smoothly, then it's most likely your monitor.

If you decide to do a new flat panel, consider a 19". 17" and 19" are essentially the same cost these days. A couple of major considerations in a new flat panel are: resolution and constrast ratio.
Resolution should be 1280 X 1024 minimum
Contrast Ratio should be 700:1 minimum

Try checking out www.pricewatch.com This site will give you a list of monitors and vendors so you can compare specs and prices.

Current prices for a good 19" flat panel are running about $170 to $225. If you watch things closely you'll probably be able to find deals with a rebate and end up with a final price in the area of $100 to $150.

Another good site to look at for prices is www.tigerdirect.com

Hope this helps.

If you unplug the monitor from the computer you should get some words on the monitor. You can test to see if your monitor works fine or not. If you still have trouble with it when it's not hooked to the computer then your monitor needs to be replaced or fixed, otherwise it's your computer. I suspect it's your monitor though.

If you can make it work by playing with the monitors power switch, then the monitor is at fault.

What kind of monitor is it, CRT or LCD flat panel?

Check the connections on the back of the tower.
