Best time to transplant is in the spring. Black eyed susans are very heavy self seeders...any seeds that drop this fall will result in new plants next spring. So, if you wait...you'll have plenty more to move, divide and share next spring.

I agree with Angela. Fall is the better time to transplant established perennials. Susans do come easily from seed and are readily available at most garden centers for spring planting, but if you have your own crop, transplant in October, before the first frost (Here in Zone 5B, that's usually Mid-October.). Keep watered, if fall rains are not regular. If you're transplanting very old plants, a little shot of root stimulant doesn't hurt, either.

Black eyed susans are biennial, which means they grow foliage the first year and send up flowers inthe second year - like hollyhocks. Not knowing anything about where you live, I would suggest sowing seeds this fall - or now, if you like. They will probably not flower next year, but should quickly establish in the following year, and re-seed themselves into the future. They are a great flower - one of my favorites! Good luck!

Spring and fall are the best times to plant. However, my vote goes to fall for the best time to plant/move perennials. The plants will have a month or two (depending on how soon your winter comes) to get settled in and even after the first frost comes and stops the growth above ground they will continue to grow under the ground (root system). So plants moved in the fall have a head start of several months over the ones moved in the spring.

Hope this helps =o)

Those things are so sturdy & hard to kill - you could probably transplant them anytime - so long as you keep them frequently watered if it's dry. If you move them when they'r ein bloom, the flowers will most likely croak, but the plant itself should make it.

But as the first answerer said - spring is best - the plants are small 9haven't sent up the long stakls yet), and they are in growing mode.
