Get more experience! The more volunteering you've done in primary schools the more likely you are to be accepted.
Have you thought about applying for the GTP (Graduate Teacher Programme)? With your experience you would be a good candidate for this. There is a salary (about £14K) and you train on the job. See http://www.tda.gov.uk/Home/Recruit/thetrainingprocess/typesofcourse/gtp.aspx

Apply for the course you want early, definitely by December but you will have a better chance if you apply now. Think about how you will explain why you want to switch from post-16 to primary teaching. You will need GCSE C or equivalent in maths, English and science. Practise spelling and grammar if you are rusty. Read up on subjects you are not familiar with and up-to-date material on learning theory if your post 16 qualification is more than a couple of years old. Good luck!

Places on Primary PGCE courses are going like hot cakes so get in there asap. The higher your class of degree, the better. And if you have any relevant experience, fantastic. Make sure you have a good reference and wow them on the interview.

Hi

Hot topics in education at the minute are Every Child Matters, Assessment for Learning, learning styles and promoting independent learning so it's always handy to have heard of the buzzwords and have some understanding of the ethos behind them - you wouldn't be expected at this stage to be able to implement them though!

There's also the usual stuff about the National Literacy and National Numeracy strategies.

Good luck!
