My daughter asked me this morning why they call the end of a road "dead". I truely don't know. She's only five and thinks that there's bats and all kinds of crazy stuff on a dead end road. Does anyone know the true answer?

Because there is a big pile of dead people at the end of the road.

For a five year old I would suggest this... The road used to be long like all the others but it died. It is remembered by the sign, just like a tombstone. There is nothing scary about a tombstone. It is just a sign, and the road is just shorter now.
I also found this poem I thought was pretty funny.

Although, why they actually call it that, I would have to agree with the others that dead is the end, there is no longer anywhere to go, or they ran out of money to finish the road and the project died. Good luck

when driving down the road and the road ends it just dies and there is nothing there.if it was not dead there would be more road. dead means the end and there is no more. when you are dead it will be the end. same goes for the road

A dead-end is a street with only one inlet/outlet and a turnaround area at its closed end.

A street or alley that must be exited from the same spot it is entered from.
