Some of these people completely missed the point of your question.

As far as food is concerned it depends on the tempurature of your pond. Carp (goldfish and koi) have a very simply digestive system consisting of only an elongated intestine. Because of that their digestive enzime can only break down certain types of food at different tempuratures. During summer months when water temps are 68-75 degrees F you can feed them pretty much anything including caratinoid based foods that enhance color. During spring and fall when the temp is not below 60 degrees F you can feed them algae or fish emal based food. And when the temp is between 38-60 a wheat germ based diet. Below that and you can just let them go without food for up to 3 months and they would be fine. Just remeber they might still eat other food diets but come spring time when your water is pea soup green you will know why not to feed them food they cannot digest.

koi fish are like gold fish, but the koi's get a lot bigger and larger, koi fish can live in a built in pond in your house which means they recomment a large tank to fit in cuz of their growing size , if you have good filter which contains and able to give a good water condition and formulate the 2 main things "biological" "chemical" growth in the filter. Some fish likes a high level of ph balance on their water, well the koi's might want a ph level of 6 to 7 probably , just keep your tank clean and change your filter for every 3 months cuz you're trying not to elimate the bacteria which are good for your fish. for their food, go the pet store and ask or look for their food, koi food are usually separated from the other fish they are much bigger than normal pellets.

as long as their water is pretty clear, and you have a pump, you should be fine. Some will eat plants (start them on lettuce), others won't. At pet stores / walmart, there is koi fish food. I just got a big 1.75# box of it for 19.99 at petsupermarket. it'll last at least 6 months. Feed a bit in the morning and at night. Just what they can eat in 5 min. Food canNOT settle to the bottom. Big time bad. We have 4 med koi, 1 small koi, and 5 tiny black fish. They eat around 2 tablespoons in morning and 2 tablespoons at night. Thats in warm weather. In cool weather, feed every 1-3 days just once.
