If you have any reason to suspect termites might be present call an exterminator immediately, They are trained to determine if you do or don't have them. And if you do most have a guarantee for a certain number of years--ask about that when you call. Termites are one thing that it's not wise to try to tackle on your own. Treatments you get in lawn and garden centers are not strong enough to last for years. The stuff most exterminators use is a much better chemical for the long run. Don't take a chance with your house.

Termites will walk up the house and leave dirt trails up your foundation. You can walk around your house and look for them, but you also have to get in your crawlspace to, unless you have a basement. Im an experienced carpenter and ive seen a lot of houses with termites. The key thing termites need is water. The amazing thing is they can sense water deep inside your walls. Termites need water to survive. The most advanced thing to do that will confirm 100 percent if you have termites is to take down the first row of siding down. Termites will eat from the ground up. So if your first row is good so is the rest up. Down south where there is a high volume of termites there is a metal flashing that is installed under the first row of siding that is hooked so the termites cant crawl up to your wood. If you dont have the experience to take down boards and if your really want to be sure call an exterminator. They are very inexpensive and one treatment will last a long time, i cant recall off hand but i think its over 6 months if a year or two of protection. The price for this is under 100 per treatment. Ive had one job where the termites ate so much of the house, all of the siding came down, the sheathing and we had to refr

Call an exterminator as they know how and where to check for damage. In the meantime remove all wood from around the house, firewood, wood chips, etc as you are only encouraging the little beasties. Make sure that you do not have any leaks in the house since they also need moisture. You can treat the house yourself but it will not be too effective as you cannot buy the type of chemicals that are used professionally.

Oh God, yes! We had termites. They came and put a huge tent over the whole house and gassed so that anything living in the house would die, including the termites in the walls and ceilings.
Then they aired out the house for 3 days.
