FLUTTER KICK:
- legs straight (don't bend your knees)
- toes pointed
- rapid leg movements up and down
(keeps the body on the surface. Most people don't do flutter kicks fast enough, hence when they swim, their body is on an angle in the water. If it were on the surface, they would glide through the water much faster.)
=] best of luck!

The kicking motion during crawl stroke and backstroke initiated from the hips and not the knees, although the knees may flex, they should not bend. This, by the way, enables the weight of the legs to get lighter and makes it easier to "pull" yourself through the water faster while swimming. The reason why is that your legs create a bit of propulsion as opposed to being dragged along as dead weight.
