The Vinegar works well if you used enough to wash the towels in.
Usually the fabric is picking up the musty odor from the washing machine or the dryer. Get a couple of gallons of the least expensive white vinegar and clean all the exposed areas of your washer then run a gallon through the washer with a load of the towels. Let them agitate for almost the first wash and then stop the machine and let them soak for a couple of hours before finishing the wash cycle.
Avoid using liquid detergent with the towels...........use a good brand of laundry powder....tide, all, gain etc.
Always dry the towels immediately after washing.

Add half a cup of bleach to your wash load after it has almost filled, unless you have a separate bleach cup. Even if colored, it won't fade them since it will be diluted. Will remove any musty smells; I use bleach regularly on my towels for that reason. Just don't pour it directly onto the towels or it will cause bleach spots.
Bleach is cheap! And it really disinfects the towels.

YOu have to kill the bacteria in the to get the smell out. WHile they are wet hang them all outside for a day(on a sunny day). When you bring them in make sure you dont put too many in the wash and wash them with bleach(whites). Vinger for colors. Make sure you get them out of the dryer as soon as they are dry.

Wash with hottest water possible. Put vinegar in the rinse cycle.
Hang outside on a very sunny day...then throw in dryer with fabric softener sheet to fluff.
If this doesn't work...toss 'em.

Use Color safe Bleach, unless the towels are white, use regular in that case. Odd, that smell should come out with a regular wash.

Not all towels are white so try putting in some baking soda in with your detergent about 1/4 cup.
