I have a pet theory that NONE of the passengers of the crashed plane actually survived and they are all in some kind of purgatory, creating their own heaven or hell and acting out their karma through the events on the island.

The point of the show is to build the story gradually and slowly reveal what is really going on. Its part of the fun and excitement of watching the show. Unlike most shows with have self contained episodes set in a particular place Lost is telling several long stories over the course of the series. They are doing a brilliant job in my opinion. Here are some of the major stories going on (very much in a nut shell):
The Darma Initiative and the Hanso Foundation story (their work on the island, identity, what happen to them, etc)
The Others (their identity, connection to the island, etc.)
The passengers (their backgrounds, connections to each other, etc.)
Misc. stuff to be covered: the giant statue, the ship Black Rock, the French woman, the island itself, etc. etc. etc.
There is just to much to get into more specifics. Check out the web, its full of Lost sites. Watch the DVDs to get caught up (I did). Dont try to figure it all out now. All will be revealed.....just have patience and enjoy the ride.
As for those people suggesting the writers have no idea where the show is going I think are wrong. I truly believe the writers have an overriding concept of the shows direction and ultimate conclusion but the details of that direction are created as the show progresses. They would have to in order to maintain such a complex series.

I have theories, but can't wait for the season to start up again. I look forward to seeing how the others play out as I remember an interview with one of the series writers or producers who stated that the third season was about looking at who the others are and if they are good or bad.
My favorite theory was shot out of the water at the end of last season with the snipit of the researchers and Penelope. But I think that Penelope's dad is going to be somehow involved in the islands existance. Guess I have to wait and see

I would say that in order to maintain interest, as policy the writers have no clear-cut ideas of an ending or where the plot may lead. To an extent it has a life of its own. Even this has limitations and it will have to end at some stage - maximum of 4 series.

Here's the deal.... It's PURPOSFULY made to be confusing. The whole point of the show is to confuse the viewer. Why? Just to keep people tuned in from week to week.
If they could, they would drag this show out for 25 years!!
