Actually it is in the shape of a sine wave. AC starts out positive and reaches a peak, and then starts to drop to zero, and then to the negative side, and comes up again to the positive side. This happens 60 times per second. This is why AC in the US is 120V, 60 Hertz (cycles per second).

it's not exactly U shape but it has a "sinusoidal wave form" because it's direction and magnitude change with respect to time.
