Show Boat - because it was the first musical to have a serious book, and dealt with issues.
South Pacific - because of the beautiful songs and scenery in the movie.
It all comes down you an op pinion. Even with a background in music, you don't know every musical ever written.
There were operas, operettas, and rock musicals like Tommy that could also be included, but you specified musicals.
"My Fair Lady" had beautiful music and a social message, as well as a message in self confidence.
"No strings" because it was different
"Oliver" since I was a kid when I saw the movie.
There are no bests. There are only a group of great ones.
There are many I left out.
"Flower Drum Song:", "The Lion King" , "Cinderella", "The Fantastisks", "Up On Your Toes", "Singing in the Rain",

Les Miserables.
I've seen a few on stage musicals, and even though I love them, about halfway through it gets a bit tedious until the story starts hotting up again and the musical score takes a change. That seems to be the format. With Les Miserables, I was captivated from beginning to end and I never once got bored with the story. I also loved the way that one actor plays Jean ValJean from a young man to an old man, and the production is of a really high standard all round. Its still on at the west end after years and years.
Who said Godspell???? I went to see that and didn't understand one part of it!

Phantom of the Opera is a good one. I love the music. It's emotionally expressive, sensuous, and haunting. The mystery, the passion, the intrigue...I love it all. I also admire the complex character of the Phantom...dark, intimidating, but also sensitive- he feels so much emotion, and it always amazes me how great an actor it takes to express so much from behind a mask.
My other favorite...I can't believe nobody's said this one yet...is Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It's about a barber in the 1700's who was wrongly convicted and sent to prison because the judge wanted his wife...he escapes, comes back to London, and reopens his shop under a pseudonym...and then kills his customers and has his friend Mrs. Lovett bake them in meat pies. It's dark, funny, tragic, shocking...everything a musical should be. It also has a hilarious song called "Have a Little Priest." A must-see.

CATS is the best I've been to. There's always something going on on stage, all the songs are so different from each other so there's plenty of musical variations. With a good troupe you can really believe they're cat-people. You'll be singing along for days after

All of them!! At the moment I am going through a Cats phase. I'm not sure why though. I love the costumes, and the music goes well with TS Eliots poems. All the cats have such good characters and I love listening about them. My favourite cat (if you wanted to know!) is Demeter. Shame she doesn't have her own song. Oh also, I love the way they dance - so cat like! I hope its back in London soon!

well like most people I have not seen all the musicals ever made so actually the best musical in the world may be one of the ones that I have not seen. Of the ones I have seen I would have to say oklahoma for the ingenuity of the lyrics

Oooh there's so many I like.
Calamity Jane for sheer brilliance and fun and of course Doris Day.
Annie, Get your Gun has some great songs (There's no business like Show business etc) but some fairly cringe-worthy moments.
I've always loved Cats (even though it is Andrew Lloyd Webber) because it's exciting and the songs are great.
Oluver! is great for the songs and so is Grease and Annie
Hmm I can't pick just one!
