I'm curious to know what doctors find in an ultrasound that would indicate spina bifida. I know it's something to do with a spinal column that doesn't close all the way. Does it every appear on the ultrasound like there is a hole in the meninges or fluid surrounding the brain?

I saw what I thought was something weird on my baby's ultrasound - but an untrained eye - probably shouldn't make anything of it unless a doctor says to, but I'd still like to learn more.

Ultrasound in the second trimester can detect spina bifida and other neural tube defects by looking at a cross-section view of the fetal head and visualizing the lateral ventricles, which are part of the fluid collecting system in the brain: the "lemon sign" denotes the scalloping (overlapping) frontal bones, which makes the cross section appear lemon shaped rather than oval and is predictive of spina bifida. The "banana sign" refers to the abnormally shaped midbrain and an elongated cerebellum in the Arnold-Chiari malformation. Among fetuses with neural tube defects, the "lemon sign" can be detected in 80% and the "banana sign" in 93% of cases.
