It's all done in binary (base 2) so it's 1024 megabytes, not 1000 which is decimal (base 10).
a bit is the smallest unit of memory available. it's basically like a switch and can store 1 or 0 (on or off).
8 bits make a byte, which is more useful, because it can store a number or a letter like "A"
Kilobytes are simply 1024 bytes
Megabytes are 1024 Kilobytes or 1024*1024 bytes (1048576)
Gigabytes are 1024 Megabytes or (1024*1024) * 1024 bytes (1073741824)
So if you ignore everything else memory is used for, 1 Gigabyte is enough to store 1073741824 letters...

Gigabytes are units of measurement of data in computing terms.
A gigabyte is 1024 megabytes (Mb).
A megabyte is 1024 kilobytes (Kb).
A kilobyte is 1024 bytes.
A byte usually refers to 8 bits. (a bit is zero or one).
In ASCII text (a common text data format), each character is represented by 8 bits - so from that you can figure out how much text will fit in a gigabyte.
Hope that helps...
